Physical Considerations & Preparations for a Psychedelic Experience

Updated: Apr 3, 2024

Psychedelics generally have a low potential for physical harm when used responsibly and in appropriate settings, but even so, it is essential to approach them with caution, awareness, and respect for their potential effects on the body.

In this short video, we discuss important physical considerations to make before a psychedelic experience, including physical ailments, contraindications, and how to show up physically for a medicine journey.

If you're preparing for a journey, here are some questions to consider now:

  • Do I have any medical conditions or am I taking any medications? If so, have I done research and/or consulted with a healthcare professional about potential interactions between my medications/conditions and psychedelics?

  • What small day-to-day choices can I make to invest in my body to prepare for my medicine journey? Please pick 2 or 3 of the following areas to focus on:

    • Can I abstain from consuming alcohol and other drugs in the days leading up to my psychedelic experience?

    • Are there ways to detox my body before the experience?

    • How can I consume more nourishing, wholesome foods that are rich in amino acids, antioxidants, magnesium and Vitamin D, and easy to digest and provide essential vitamins and minerals? (Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats are recommended to support hormone and neurotransmitter production!)

    • How can I stay better hydrated in the days leading up to my journey?

    • How can I get better rest to ensure optimal physical and mental functioning?

    • How can I incorporate more exercise into my life?

    • How can I incorporate practices such as meditation, mindfulness, journaling, art, yoga, or spending time in nature to calm my body?

By reflecting on and addressing these questions, we might better prepare ourselves physically for the journey ahead. The health and wellness of our body is an essential component to having a safe, meaningful, and transformative experience!
